Osamu Dazai's novel Ningen Shikkaku (No Longer Human) is a profoundly moving and deeply disturbing exploration of nihilism, isolation, and the search for meaning in a meaningless world. The novel follows the life of Yozo Obata, a young man who is filled with a deep sense of alienation and despair. Obata's life is a series of failed relationships, missed opportunities, and self-destructive behavior. As he moves through life, Obata becomes increasingly isolated and withdrawn, until he eventually succumbs to suicide.

Ningen Shikkaku is a powerful and unflinching look at the dark side of human nature. It is a novel that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

Nihilism and the Meaningless World

One of the central themes of Ningen Shikkaku is nihilism, the belief that life is meaningless and without purpose. Obata is a nihilist who sees no point in living. He feels that life is a meaningless void, and that there is no point in striving for anything. This nihilism leads Obata to a life of self-destruction. He drinks heavily, takes drugs, and engages in other self-destructive behaviors.

Obata's nihilism is a product of his experiences in the world. He has seen the horrors of war, the poverty and suffering of the poor, and the hypocrisy of the rich and powerful. He has come to believe that the world is a cruel and unjust place, and that there is no point in trying to make it better. This nihilism leads Obata to despair, and he eventually gives up on life.

Isolation and Alienation

Another central theme of Ningen Shikkaku is isolation and alienation. Obata is a deeply lonely and isolated individual. He feels like he does not belong in the world, and that no one understands him. This isolation leads Obata to withdraw from society. He spends most of his time alone, reading books and drinking. He has no friends, and he does not trust anyone.

Obata's isolation is a product of his own personality. He is a sensitive and introspective individual who is easily hurt by others. He is also very proud, and he does not like to ask for help. This combination of sensitivity and pride makes it difficult for Obata to connect with others. He feels like he is different from everyone else, and that no one can understand him.

The Search for Meaning

Despite his nihilism and isolation, Obata still longs for meaning in his life. He tries to find meaning in his relationships with others, in his work, and in his art. However, he is always disappointed. He finds that relationships are fleeting, that work is meaningless, and that art is only a temporary distraction from the void. Obata's search for meaning is ultimately unsuccessful. He is unable to find anything that gives him a sense of purpose or direction. This failure leads Obata to despair, and he eventually gives up on life.

Ningen Shikkaku is a powerful and moving novel that explores the dark side of human nature. It is a novel about nihilism, isolation, and the search for meaning in a meaningless world. Obata is a deeply flawed and tragic character, but he is also a very real and relatable character. His story is a reminder that we are all capable of great suffering, and that we all need to find meaning in our lives.

If you are struggling with nihilism, isolation, or depression, please know that you are not alone. There are people who care about you and who want to help you. Please reach out to a friend, family member, or mental health professional. There is help available, and you do not have to suffer alone.
