Markdown is a lightweight markup language that you can use to add formatting elements to plaintext documents. It was created by John Gruber in 2004 as a way to create formatted text that is easy to read and write. Markdown is now widely used for authoring and technical documents, such as README files, project documentation, and technical reports.

This article provides a comprehensive guide to using Markdown for authoring and technical documents. We will cover the basics of Markdown syntax, as well as more advanced topics such as using Markdown for code blocks, tables, and images.

  • Lists: Lists are created using the asterisk () or hyphen (-) character. To create a bulleted list, use the asterisk character (). To create a numbered list, use the hyphen character (-).
  • Code blocks: Code blocks are created using the backtick character (`). To create a code block, simply enclose the code in backticks.
  • Tables: Tables are created using the pipe character (|). To create a table, simply separate the columns with pipes.
  • Images: Images are created using the exclamation mark (!) character. To create an image, simply include the URL of the image in parentheses after the exclamation mark.
