Early Life and Education

Princess Kaiulani was born on October 16, 1879, at 'Iolani Palace in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was the only child of Princess Miriam Likelike and Prince Albert Edward Kauikeaouli, who were both first cousins and descendants of King Kamehameha I, the founder of the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Kaiulani was a bright and precocious child. She was fluent in Hawaiian, English, and French, and she enjoyed playing the piano and composing music. She was also a talented dancer and hula performer.

In 1887, Kaiulani was sent to England to study at the Royal School in Bath. She excelled in her studies and became a popular figure in British society. She was presented to Queen Victoria and became a close friend of Princess Beatrice, the Queen's youngest daughter.

Return to Hawaii

Kaiulani returned to Hawaii in 1891. She was greeted by a crowd of cheering supporters who saw her as a symbol of the Hawaiian monarchy. Kaiulani quickly became involved in public affairs. She supported her aunt, Queen Lili'uokalani, in her efforts to resist the growing American influence in Hawaii.

In 1893, the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown by a group of American businessmen and planters. Kaiulani was devastated by the loss of her homeland. She traveled to the United States and Europe to lobby for Hawaiian independence, but her efforts were unsuccessful.

Later Life and Legacy

Kaiulani spent the rest of her life in exile in Europe. She died of typhoid fever in Honolulu on March 6, 1899, at the age of 23. Her death was a tragic loss for Hawaii and for the world.

Kaiulani is remembered as a symbol of Hawaiian sovereignty and resistance. She was a courageous and intelligent woman who dedicated her life to the cause of her people. Her legacy continues to inspire Hawaiians today.
