Aida was left alone and orphaned at a young age. She was forced to fend for herself on the streets of San Salvador. She begged for food and slept in doorways. She was often harassed and abused by the police and soldiers.

In 1980, Aida joined the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN),a rebel group fighting against the government. She became a guerrilla fighter and fought in the civil war that ravaged El Salvador for over a decade.

In 1983, Aida was captured by government forces. She was tortured and imprisoned for four years. During her time in prison, she was repeatedly raped and beaten. She was also forced to watch the execution of her fellow prisoners.

In 1987, Aida was released from prison as part of a peace agreement. She returned to El Salvador and began working for peace and reconciliation. She founded the Association of Victims of Political Violence, an organization that provides support to survivors of the civil war.

In 1993, Aida was awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award for her work. She has also received the Order of Merit from the Salvadoran government and the Peace Prize from the United Nations.

Aida's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. She has overcome unimaginable tragedy and violence to become a beacon of hope and forgiveness. Her work has helped to heal the wounds of the civil war and build a more just and peaceful El Salvador.

Aida's message of forgiveness and reconciliation is a difficult one to hear, but it is essential for healing the wounds of war and building a more just and peaceful world.
