Lupe Vélez was born on July 18, 1908, in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. She was the youngest of seven children. Her father was a wealthy landowner, and her mother was a devout Catholic. Vélez had a difficult childhood. Her father was often away on business, and her mother was strict and unloving. Vélez was also molested by her uncle when she was a child.

Despite her difficult childhood, Vélez was a determined and ambitious young woman. She began her career as a dancer and singer in Mexico City. In 1927, she met the American film director Raoul Walsh. Walsh was impressed by Vélez's beauty and talent, and he cast her in his film The Gaucho (1927). Vélez's performance in the film was well-received, and she soon became a popular Hollywood star.

Vélez was known for her fiery personality, her exotic beauty, and her comedic talents. She starred in a number of successful films, including The Mexican Spitfire (1939),Mexican Spitfire Out West (1940),and Mexican Spitfire's Baby (1941). Vélez also appeared in a number of Broadway plays, including The Women (1936) and Hellzapoppin' (1938).

Vélez's personal life was as tumultuous as her career. She was married and divorced four times. She also had a number of affairs, including one with the actor Errol Flynn. Vélez was also known for her excessive drinking and drug use.

On December 13, 1944, Vélez was found dead in her Hollywood home. She had taken an overdose of sleeping pills. Vélez's death was a shock to her fans and colleagues. She was only 36 years old.

Lupe Vélez was a complex and fascinating woman. She was a talented actress, a fiery personality, and a tragic figure. She left behind a legacy of laughter and heartache, and she remains one of the most unforgettable stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
